In Japan there is a unique suspension bridge called Akashi Kaikyo as it crosses the Akashi Strait. However, it is known by another name, very organic and well-aimed – Pearl Bridge. It is the longest suspension bridge in the world. Structures like bridges traditionally include steel cables. Therefore, at the Pearl Bridge there are so many such cables that their total length of the seven times enough to encircle the planet.

Pearl Bridge was built in 1988, when construction conditions were incredibly difficult – in the Strait there often were severe storms and shipping on it is more than active – daily almost fifteen hundred vessels swim through it. Initially, the project involved the construction of the central section of the bridge of 1990 meters long. However, in 1995, Kobe was a strong earthquake, and one of the pylons of the bridge moved a meter. In connection with the caprice of nature in the construction of the bridge the changes had to be made – the central span had become one meter longer. Various technological problems in the construction were solved on the go, in very original and ultimately successful way. So, since there was pouring of concrete directly beneath the water, it required the creation of a new type of concrete, a curable in virtually any environment.

Pearl Bridge has been built ten years and opened on April 5, 1998. Its total length is 3911 meters, the central span -1991 meters, two side spans – 960 meters. It was and still is the longest suspension bridge in the world, but not the highest after entering Viaduct Milo. This suspension bridge is resistant to strong underwater currents and wind speeds of up to 80 meters per second, and it is not afraid of the earthquake to 8.5 points. This is largely due to a particularly strong, the strong rope, assembled by a special system – from a variety of steel wire bundles, with each bundle consisted of more than a hundred wires with a diameter of 5 millimeters. The suspension bridge was built by two million workers, it took $ 5 billion. Therefore, the cost of travel on the suspension bridge is large enough – 20 dollars. As a result, only few people can afford to pass on the bridge, while all other use ferries.
