Windhoek is quite a young city in the south of the African continent. At the beginning of the XIX century from South Africa Dutchman Van Denervaud with his men came here by land, and then, a short time the territory was controlled by the British. In 1890, the settlement of local tribes, the Herero and Ovambohad have been captured by the German legions, and in its place created the capital of the German colony in southern Africa. The local population had a fierce resistance to the invaders.
Overnight Herero cut the entire squad of colonial troops – soldiers, officers, along with their families. Then, by sea, a whole division was sent to Windhoek, which is no less harshly dealt with resistance. The German influence is clearly visible in the architecture of Namibia’s capital city, lifestyles, culture, and even in the habits of the locals, which are already more than 300 thousand people in the city. In XX century the town has long been controlled by South Africa. A hundred years from the founding of Windhoek it became the capital of the independent Republic of Namibia.
The main attractions are concentrated in the center of the capital, they are few, and are marked in all the guidebooks. First of all, it is Namibia’s National Museum, National Gallery, the Cathedral, the building of the Polytechnic University and the main street “Street Mall”, which focused on shops, boutiques, souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes. In the capital, a few modern high-level hotels have small private apartments. In the center you can easily walk to visit the rich neighborhoods of the city with old mansions built in the German Klein or Eros Park and modern business districts.
You can ride poor neighborhoods on the former African ghetto, but for a long time to linger here on and off the ignition is not necessary. Invisible bar separates citizens everywhere. Most affluent homes with green, landscaped areas – high fences, often topped with barbed wire, impressive castles at the gate. The white population of Windhoek is living and talking in the circle. Tourists are recommended to listen to the tour guides to select the time and places to visit, then nothing to worry about.
