Coromandel – at the same time the name of the port, the city and the mountain range, which was given in honor of the first ship sailing to these shores in 1820. Coromandel is known as the center of gold mining in New Zealand. Here in 1842 deposits of gold were discovered, then they quickly ran out, but in the late 19th century, were discovered more powerful new fields. Gold mining in the vicinity of Coromandel was discontinued only in the early 20th century. Even now we can find minerals containing gold. In the Coromandel there is a museum, which shows the old ways of its production, kauri trees and their products. In some photos of the century diameter of cut wood cowry was more than doubled human growth.
Near the town first enthusiast Barry Brickell planted kauri grove, and then the project was developed within the framework of the international program on forest regeneration. Not far from it passes the narrow-gauge railway, built by the same Barry Brickell in 1975 to recreate the forest, through which you can pass on today – restored kauri forest on top of the hill. On east coast of Coromandel Pacific beaches with clear water are very famous, which unlike from the Tasman Sea it is possible not only to flop into the water between the bars, but also swim. This, however, does not apply to Hot Water Beach, which is known for its hot springs, facing directly the beach, but there is a fairly strong stream in the sea. So much so that on all maps there is a warning «Extremely dangerous».
However in only 6 km of the beach Hai a great sea with pink sand is located. Near Hai there is a natural monument Cathedral Cove, which was the first water object, taken under protection in New Zealand. Piha beach is located in the suburbs of Auckland, 28 km to the west. Here is the Waitakere Range National Park. Information center of the park, Arataki, is made in the style of Maori meeting houses. The park was created to protect the rain forest and kauri trees. The coast in this area is quite deserted and is famous for the fact that the sea always has great waves. This is a popular place for surfers. Muriwai beach is located just in the north of Piha. The sand is black, too. This beach is famous for its colony of gannets.
